Environmental Issues

Industrial activities cause various negative impacts on the environment. Emissions to air (both greenhouse gases and other hazardous pollutants), water and soil occur where large factories, refineries, intensive agriculture, power stations and other forms of industry operate.  Please refer to the dedicated pages for more information about the opportunities ahead to prevent and control pollution at source in relation to the topical subjects of decarbonisation/climate protection,  air quality, water quality and soil quality

Certain industrial processes use and/or produce chemicals of concern and use large amount of resources. These activities can indirectly lead to further negative environmental impacts. The following dedicated  section of the website address cross-cutting environmental issues complementary to the relevant EU BREF sections, such as resource efficiency / circular economy, pollutants of concern and measures to prevent accidents.

Aspects linked to monitoring of emissions from industrial activities are addressed in the section related to the Industrial Emissions Portal.
